Introduction: The Roadside Risk We Don’t Talk About Enough

Every day across our motorways, laybys and city streets, thousands of people work just inches away from fast-moving traffic. Whether they’re emergency responders, recovery operatives, delivery drivers, utility workers, or road maintenance crews—these professionals put themselves in harm’s way to keep others moving safely.

Yet roadside incidents remain a major and under-acknowledged threat. Drivers often pass too fast or too close, distracted or unaware of how exposed these workers really are. And traditional safety tools—cones, lights, signs—often fall short in alerting or modifying driver behaviour.

In this post, we explore how the AirBar is changing that. We’ll explain why it was created, how it works, and why it offers a smarter, more effective layer of protection for those who work in high-risk roadside environments.

Clear warning of turns

Real People, Real Risks

How often have you passed a breakdown or crash scene on the motorway? You glance, maybe slow slightly—but do you actively change lanes or moderate your speed to consciously and actively protect those helping at the scene?

The reality is sobering: distracted or inattentive drivers are a key factor in secondary collisions.

Those at the roadside—police, paramedics, recovery drivers, or fleet operators—are often struck while simply doing their job. The same applies to those unloading vehicles, delivering goods, emptying bins or fixing potholes. Every day, they step into live traffic zones without adequate protection from other drivers.

Born from Experience

The AirBar was developed by Simon Scaife, CMILT, with firsthand experience of this risk. After yet another near-miss while loading a car transporter at the roadside, Simon knew there had to be a better way to get traffic to move over.

He wanted something simple, visible, and practical. Something that didn’t just alert drivers—but actively changed their behaviour.

From that moment, the concept of the AirBar was born.

Simple. Smart. Effective.

The AirBar is an inflatable visual barrier that attaches to the side of a stationary vehicle—creating a bold, eye-level cue for oncoming traffic to move over and slow down.

Made from durable, UV-protected material and tested to over 30,000 deployments, the AirBar inflates quickly and securely. It features bright, high-contrast colours and flashing LEDs to command attention—day or night, rain or shine.

One of its key advantages? It deploys from inside the cab. This means operators can activate the AirBar before exiting the vehicle—stepping out into an already protected workspace. Traditional methods like placing cones require stepping into live traffic, often with little visual impact. Cones are low to the ground, easily blown over, and far less visible—especially in low light or night-time conditions.

The AirBar, by contrast, remains upright, eye-level, and effective no matter the time of day or weather. And because it’s air-filled, it poses no risk of injury or damage if struck.

Why It Matters

It’s not just a gadget—it’s a life-saving tool. The AirBar makes sense because it’s:

  • Highly visible, even in poor conditions
  • Quick and safe to deploy
  • Proven to influence driver behaviour
  • Lightweight, durable, and low maintenance
  • Designed by operatives, for operatives

The question is no longer why use the AirBar—but why not?
